SANTA FE 3751 TO ATTEND LOS ANGELES UNION STATION HOLIDAY
TRAINFEST & TOY DRIVE – DECEMBER 16, 2017
The San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society (SBRHS) is pleased to announce that Santa Fe 3751 will participate under steam in next month’s Holiday TrainFest & Toy Drive, taking place at Los Angeles Union Station on Saturday, December 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. During this event the locomotive will be on display on Track 15 (accessible from Track 14) with the SBRHS’ merchandise table also present offering a wide selection of 3751 memorabilia.
One question that is likely outstanding upon hearing this news is how 3751 is partaking in this event under steam with the locomotive’s boiler having expired earlier in September. The answer: the SBRHS was granted an extension by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) earlier this month to operate the locomotive for a select number of days until the end of the year.
During its time at Union Station, 3751 will be fully adorned in holiday decor and will joined by other exciting pieces of rail equipment from agencies including: Amtrak, Metrolink and LARail.com. Other attractions will include a special visit from Santa Claus himself, the chance to enjoy holiday refreshments and meet local police and firefighters. As the goal of this event is to collect as many unwrapped toys and socks for local kids as possible, the SBRHS invites those planning to attend to bring with them items that can be donated to the United States Marine Corps Reserve “Toys for Tots” program and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.
Preparations for the move of 3751 under steam from Amtrak’s Redondo maintenance facility to Union Station will begin as early as Wednesday, December 13 at the locomotive’s storage track. Following a full steam-up on December 15, 3751 is tentatively scheduled to move from its Redondo storage track to the northern end of Amtrak’s Los Angeles coach yard where it will be staged with the other display equipment. Early the following morning, December 16, the consist will move from the yard to Union Station where it will it will be spotted prior to the event’s opening.
As always, the SBRHS will do its very best to keep our supporters and fans updated on the preparations of the locomotive, its movements and highlights during the event. Be sure to follow these updates via our website (sbrhs.org) and social media platforms on Facebook and Instagram to stay up-to-date on this and other exciting outings. For questions or concerns directly related to the event, check out the event’s page located on the Pacific Surfliner’s Facebook page.
This event is presented in collaboration with the following agencies: Amtrak, the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency (LOSSAN), Metrolink, L.A. Metro and LARail.com.
