Educational Outreach ProgramCurrently, the Educational Outreach Program focuses on a “rolling classroom” consisting of steam locomotive 3751 and several passenger cars which creates an appropriate interactive environment for the students to learn in. The train is steamed to railroad sidings near schools which reduces travel time from the school to the train and allows the surrounding community to experience this unique piece of living history.
The program material, developed from state teaching standards, is currently designed for 5th grade students as there is excellent alignment with their curriculum and what can be taught using the locomotive.
In time, the Educational Outreach Program will be expanded to incorporate additional courses that can be enjoyed and experienced by a wide range of students and age groups. Assistance is always needed from those with teaching or related experience. The program is a great way to get involved with the SBRHS while making a difference in the lives of young people.
Work is underway to expand the number of communities serviced and establish a regular schedule so that educators can plan on this program as a part of their regular curriculum. In addition, this program is a dynamic and evolving event that is adapted to the varying needs of the locations where it is presented.
