'Steam To The Grand Canyon'
In August of 2002, former Santa Fe steam locomotive 3751 returned to the rails for a thrilling excursion from Los Angeles to Williams, Arizona and return in honor of the NRHS 2002 National Convention. Leaving Los Angeles, the mighty 4-8-4 battled the grades of Cajon Pass before setting out across the desert to Needles, thrilling spectators with her awesome displays of steam power. The following day, the 3751 completed the trip to Williams where she prepared to head up the Grand Canyon Limited excursion. This highlight of the Convention featured the 3751 running on the Grand Canyon Railway, doubleheading and tripleheading with GCRy's own steam power! The scenic splendor of South Rim vistas framing nostalgic images of doubleheaded and tripleheaded steam on the rails - it's an incredible sight that can't be beat!
On the return trip from Williams to Los Angeles, 3751 made a rare-mileage trip over "the Peavine" and the Arizona & California Railroad via Parker. An exciting finale over Cajon and into the Los Angeles Basin winds up a magnificent steam event!

In August 2002 legendary Santa Fe 4-8-4 No. 3751 marched back into the Steam Age...an iron behemoth thundering across the desert floor under a canopy of black smoke with a perfectly matched period passenger train...and without water cars or diesel helpers. Not just the Steam Age as it was, but as it was meant to be! This special dawn-to-sunset charter from Williams, Arizona to the Grand Canyon is the photographic highlight of 3751’s 75-year career...a Goodheart exclusive found in full glory only on this video. We didn’t stop there. Multiple cameras cover the 4 days of round-trip action to reach the NRHS convention site from Los Angeles... including leaving LAUPT, Cajon Pass, Kingman Canyon, Hell’s Canyon Bridge and the Peavine Line.

Golden Rails Video
The Official Video of the 62nd Annual NRHS Convention
THE JOURNEY of 3751
Those of you familiar with GOLDEN RAIL's approach to "railfan" videos could easily have predicted this new show will not only feature...lots of DRAMATIC RUNBYS. Crew insights and a tour of 3751's remarkable cab.
Historic moments...and of course 3751 double and triple-heading with 4960 and 18.
I almost forgot... the Private Varnish Tour of the convention train featuring 13 exquisitely restored mid-20th century passenger cars.
The Private Varnish Tour is pratically a tape in and of itself giving viewers a full-appreciation of the rolling museum that was the convention train.
Not to forget..the quality-time we spend with George & Phil, two engineers who ran the 3751 back in the days of the Santa Fe Ry.
All of this and more is presented in Golden Rail's unique and satisfying blend of railroad history and stunning action. And, of course, there are a few surprises...
CANYON RAILS 2002 experience...well, you'll just have to see the video. As you can imagine...
...putting all this footage together into a cohesive and entertaining show took a lot of effort, but it was well worth it.
I believe you, too, will have a very good time.
