(Part III)

Saturday morning the engine crew was called at 7:30 and Bill Stetler and Bob Kittel would take the convention train along with the 2 Genesis locomotives tacked on to the rear to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Many runbys were done with and without 4960 as the train headed for the Grand Canyon Depot. Once there riders detrained and had a couple of hours to sightsee before the train headed back down to Wilaha where the 4960 was waiting to double head back into Williams. More runbys (a total of 11 for the day), and upon returning to the yard limits in Williams, 18 was added to the front of the train for a dusk runby at milepost 3. Then the triple header rolled into Williams like royalty. Once back the 3751 received a full service, water and fuel for the Sunday morning departure. Service crews finished preparations for the trip home at 3:00am.

Sunday’s engine crew call was for 7:30am, Mike Thornton and Phil Kauke ran the train out of Williams to Matthie in another uneventful run. Arrived in Matthie at 1:00pm, there was a full service and an engine crew change, Bill Stetler and Paul Prine ran her to Parker. On the way there were plenty of runbys, 3 at Wenden, and 3 more just outside of Parker before arriving a half hour early at 6:30pm.

Engine service crews did a full service, watered and fueled the hungry locomotive. When Bob Kittel returned around 10:00pm from dinner it was discovered we were out of sand, a bucket brigade moved sand from the tenders sand box for sanding the flues up to the sand dome on top of the engine. Took about an hour to complete before everyone was off to bed at 11:00pm.
