In order to continue reaching out to a large variety of communities and ages, we are always thinking of ways to expand our education program. Planned expansions of the program and new ideas will be presented on this site in order to for you to see the ways in which we are constantly improving the outreach of this program.
3751 Railroad Adventure Crew
The SBRHS Educational Outreach Program is currently working on the development of its newest expansion, the 3751 Railroad Adventure Crew. This program will offer a unique way to introduce young people to railroading including real world operations and hobbyist activities. Most importantly, it will provide a fun, uplifting environment with positive adult role models as a means to foster responsibility and better citizenship in the students. The inclusion of shop skill training along with math, science and history will also help supplement normal classroom curriculum.
Planned Features
- Open to students from grades 5 through 12
- Students will be paired with an SBRHS member sponsor – either a parent, guardian, or qualified SBRHS member
- Regular (monthly) meetings
- Dedicated website and newsletter for the youth program members
- Substance-abuse free, positive environment
Program curriculum will include:
- Safety first emphasis
- Field trips
- Hands-on workshop instruction
- Railroad and related field career opportunities
- “Older to Younger” mentoring program
- Expanded coverage of railroad history and modern railroad operations
- Steam locomotive theory, construction and operation
- Math and science incorporated into shop and steam locomotive instruction (using state standards).
